Aa Gale Lag Jaa

Unmarried (through her dad´s evil intrigue) heroine gives birth to baby boy. Her father strikes a deal with doctor to tell daughter that baby is a stillborn. Baby is given to father of baby (who overhearing said conversation accidently finds out a: that he´s going to be a father, and b: what the evil dad is planning) provided that he will never reveal to anybody that this is in fact heroine´s and hero´s baby. So he tells everybody that it is an orphan he found in a temple. Mother of hero happens to walk into hospital room of grieving heroine with the baby in her arms. And being empathetic offers it to heroine as substitute for her "dead" baby. Evil father is cringing in his seat while watching unfolding scene. But can breathe easily again as heroine is thankful for the gesture but refuses the offer.
Perfect. Heartwrenching.

Even more perfect, as hero is Shashi Kapoor and heroine Sharmila Tagore.

I love Manmohan Desai´s lost-and-found masala film from the 70ies. Here it is poor boy and rich girl falling in love. First aid situation leads to steamy night. Boy and girl consent to shaadi. Her dad intervenes with forged letters and so they are seperated. Girl is pregnant and unhappy. Boy is lonely and unhappy. Hero makes something out of him teaching rollerskating to kids, teenagers and hip twens. And raises a great kid, who is is stricken by polio and thus has problems walking.

Little sweet fast talking boy meets his mom and likes her and tries to get his dad and the nice lady together. And in the course of doing so makes his grumpy granddad fall for him too. And there is also mom´s fiancé and a little sister and very fancy dressed bad boys and rollerskating and a game of musical chairs. And the coolest shirts and patterns.

Loved it. Cried a lot. Could be convinced to have a kid like that any time.

Oh. Rukh chao. I almost forgot the coolest thing. The red chawl-cap thingy. (Screencap will be added when I get home tonight. Suspense is mounting)
EDIT: here it is...

Fantabulous. Hai naa?

Yes, the 70s movies were full of masal and very enjoyable. Shashi Kapoor was one of my favorite supporting actors. He was so good looking...the only problem was he never took care of his teeth :-)

Some of the great movies he did with Amitabh Bachchan like Deewar and Trishul are considered one of the greatest Indian movies ever made.

Trishul is great, but I still have to watch Deewar yet.
And Shashi´s smile always lets me forget his bad teeth LOL

Babasko: Would you mind sharing with me that who is your favorite actor and actress in Bollywood. For me it's the one and only Amitabh Bachcan. I loved SRK's earlier movies but since he has become too stylized and makes the same expression in every movie, I don't care much for him. I liked Parveen Babi from her 70s movies and loved Madhuri. Ash is very beautiful but doesn't know how to act well.

I absolutely love this movie. It's one of my favourite Shashi Kapoor movies... and I think he was one of the finest actors of that generation. It's a pity he had to play second fiddle to Amitabh a lot. In any case, I am glad I came across your blog and I look forward to your new posts.

P.S. If you want to watch a really old, and really cute, Sashi Kapoor movie I recommend Prem Patra. It's a black and white movie from the 1960's.

007 the favorite actor is easy to answer: Sanjay Dutt. And then maybe Sanjay Dutt ;-)

Actresses is much harder. of the younger ones Konkona Sen Sharma maybe and latley I grew very fond of Kareena (in her non-Poo roles like Chameli). And Madhuri, can´t wait for her "comeback" film.

D. thanx for the recommendation. Can´t get enough of Shashi. And welcome to my blog :-)

Babasko: I am not sure why but I thought SRK was your favorite. Yes, I am also waiting eagerly for Madhuri's return. It remains to be seen how she's going to look in her new movie, but she was sooo wonderful in her 80s/90s movies.

I'm watching this movie right now and I cannot believe that we're supposed to believe that they could possibly be pregnant. I mean, Sharmila and Shashi make a baby and we don't even get to see any of it? Bah!

beth - get you mind out of the gutter. the way their chemistry sizzles they only needed to look at each other to become pregnant....

The more I think about this scene the more disturbed I get. If she was so...what's the right word...shaken? out of her mind? panicked? that she couldn't speak or take off her own clothes, then it pretty much seems she could not really have consented to anything, you know what I mean? I don't mean to impose a severity on this movie that wasn't intended, but...it kinda seems like rape, doesn't it? Seriously uncool.

I like how you describe the crucial night: "First aid situation leads to steamy night."

There is not even more to say about it. These things happen. The resulating baby was one of the less unrealistic aspects of the movie and there's no need to discuss this aspect any further.
